While relatively small in stature, this bowl makes a gigantic statement Not only does it showcase the beautiful light/dark contrast typical of elm, it also features a fabulous pattern of burl on the interior and exterior. And for added measure, it has a large groove running down the side from the wide rim. With a food-safe finish, it could be used to serve snacks though it would also be a fabulous accent piece on a mantel, shelf or table.

Natalie Burls, of George Mason University College of Science, is Director of the Climate Dynamics Program. Her research is focused on improving our understanding of the key processes determining earth’s climate and climate variability on timescales ranging from seasons to decades to much longer geological scales. She is especially interested in ocean-atmosphere interaction and cloud dynamics.
