This beautiful, live-edge bowl was made of figured maple. Figuring in wood is caused by environmental stresses such as sustained wind over a long period of time. It creates a fabulous pattern that’s much prized by woodturners.

After watching her Brooklyn neighborhood deteriorate, Hattie Carthan founded the Bedford-Stuyvesant beautification committee. She threw block parties on her street to raise money to buy and plant trees in the neighborhood. Following that success, she eventually oversaw more than 100 block associations which planted over 1500 trees. And she started a program to teach youth about tree care with a stipend for summer work.
