Dr. Alexandru Rapp is an associate professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds. He studied why pine trees emit the volatile gases that give pine forests their distinctive smell. He found that the gases emitted by forests form particles in the atmosphere which increase the amount of diffuse light reaching the forests. This increased light illuminates leaves that would be shaded under direct sunlight, enhances photosynthesis and increases the tree’s carbon absorption.
