This intriguing vase has grain patterns running in all directions. It was made by gluing six separate pieces of black walnut together in a stack, with different grain orientations. The result, after shaping and hollowing, is quite eye-catching with its deep, rich hues and lighter shades providing contrast. The vase comes with a glass cylinder so it may be used to hold fresh as well as dried flowers.

Researcher Erin Victory completed her Master’s Degree at Purdue University by specializing in the genetics of North American black walnut trees. Through extensive sampling of black walnut populations, she analyzed the genetic diversity and structure of these trees to understand their history. Continuing breeding efforts focus on maintaining genetic diversity and improving disease resistance.
